10,000 Steps Library Lending Program
Take Heart Algoma has developed the 10,000 Steps resource that is available to the public throughout libraries across the Algoma district. The package includes a pedometer, Making Tracks logbook, Trails guides (if available in that community), a 10,000 Step Program pamphlet and an instruction for pedometer use. People can book the program resource out of the library just as they would a book. The 10,000 Step Program is a simple 8-week program that involves using a pedometer to help you track how many steps you take or kilometers you walk/run during the day to increase your physical activity. You simply clip the pedometer on in the morning just above your hip bone and it will count every step you take throughout the day. The pedometer stays on right up until you retire for the night.
10,000 Steps Toward Healthy Living
The 10,000 Steps Toward Healthy Living Program focuses on the educational component of walking as a physical activity. It is a four-week program open to the community. The topics for the four sessions include: information on using pedometers to promote walking as a way of increasing physical activity; healthy eating; safe stretching; and use of proper footwear and active wear. The sessions are delivered in spring and early fall.

Kids in Motion
Kids in Motion is an exciting new walking initiative designed to make physical activity more fun! We are in a “couch potato” culture today with television and computers being blamed for increasing levels of physical inactivity in children. In an effort to reverse this trend, Algoma Public Health has developed a walking program package, which includes a pedometer loaning program, lesson plans, activities, teacher resource, student handbook, and pedometer information. The intent of this program is to increase the activity levels of students through walking.
Objectives of this Program:
1. To encourage students to participate regularly in a walking activity.
2. To educate students about the benefits of walking.
3. To encourage students to integrate walking into daily routines.
