March is National Nutrition Month and this year dietitians are encouraging everyone to “Celebrate food…from field to table!.” Canada produces a wide variety of healthy foods that fit into Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide including fresh vegetables and fruit, grains, milk, cheese, beef and lobster to name a few.
To kick-off Nutrition Month, Algoma Public Health is encouraging local schools to participate in FoodShare’s Great Big Crunch. This event invites students and teachers to learn about healthy eating and local and global food systems while following the journey apples go through from seed to market. Teachers and students across Canada will participate in this synchronized “crunch” by biting into an apple on March 11, 2010 at 2:30 p.m.
“The majority of Canadians do not get enough from the Vegetables and Fruit food group. This is a great way to promote an Ontario-grown fruit and make healthy eating fun for the entire school.
We could all benefit from having a few extra servings of vegetables and fruit, so we decided to join our local schools by taking a crunch as well,” says Lisa Atchison, Public Health Dietitian. To learn more about the Great Big Crunch, go to www.foodshare.net.
You can learn more about food and where it comes from at the Nutrition Month section on the Dietitians of Canada website www.dietitians.ca/eatwell. Click on Where in Canada? to discover where various foods are grown and harvested in Canada. You can also search the website for helpful resources like fact sheets, healthy eating tips and practical food solutions.
