Algoma Public Health (APH) is seeking enthusiastic students to join our team for an engaging and informative public health experience. This position will offer diverse job duties including reception, face to face contact serving the public, appointment booking, data entry, and various clerical tasks. Join us to support our vision of "Health for all. Together" and gain valuable skills in a variety of public health areas and programs.


What you will be doing/key responsibilities:

  • Provide customer service assistance by preforming reception duties and responding to public and/or internal inquiries.
  • Answer phones, direct calls, handle and deliver messages in a timely manner.
  • Verify client demographics and receive clients for clinics.
  • Book appointments in an electronic health record system.
  • Process faxes and incoming and outgoing mail or packages.
  • Process payment transactions.
  • Data entry into spreadsheets and various databases.
  • Organizing and filing archived client records.
  • Process records for destruction.
  • Perform other clerical tasks as requested.

Ability, Experience, and Skills for this position include (but not limited to):

  • Applicants must be enrolled in post–secondary studies returning to school in September 2024.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft office programs including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage a multi-line telephone system.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Effectively communicate with APH staff and clients in a professional manner.
  • Familiar with the use of general office equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and participate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, organizational, problem-solving and time management skills.
  • The duties of this position require lifting (up to 20 pounds), with frequent standing and walking.
  • Flexibility to work in other programs and services areas with training as necessary.
  • Must be reliable and available to work the entire summer period from selected start date (requests for time off are considered when they do not conflict with program needs).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is essential, proficiency in both official languages considered an asset.
  • As a condition of hire, you are required to be fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine series, per our COVID-19 Immunization policy. Should you be the successful candidate, you will be required to comply with our COVID-19 Immunization policy that is in effect.
  • A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) with satisfactory clearance is a condition of employment, at own expense.
