Emergency Department Visits

  • This figure represents the quarterly count and rate of all unscheduled emergency department (ED) visits for which opioid poisoning was listed as the main or contributing cause. Quarterly rates have not been annualized.
  • The data includes all visits to Algoma District hospitals, including visits by residents from other municipalities who accessed care in the Algoma District.
  • The data is likely an underestimate of the true burden of opioid poisoning in Algoma, since not all opioid poisonings result in an ED visit.
  • Algoma has higher rates of opioid-related ED visits when compared to Ontario.

  • The data includes opioid-related deaths for residents of Algoma District, and those that occurred in Algoma when the deceased did not have a fixed address.
  • Data for the last 12 months includes confirmed and probable cases. Data are preliminary and subject to change.
  • Algoma has higher rates of deaths from opioid poisoning when compared to Ontario.

 

Naloxone Distribution

  • This figure represents the number of Naloxone doses distributed in Algoma District through the Ministry of Health’s Ontario Naloxone Program (ONP) and the Ontario Naloxone Program for Pharmacies (ONPP).
  • The ONP distributes publicly funded Naloxone kits through needle exchange programs, Hepatitis C programs, Consumption and Treatment Services and participating community-based organizations. The ONPP distributes publicly funded Naloxone kits through pharmacies.
  • The number of doses distributed includes kits (2 doses each) and refill doses, from 2023 onward.
  • ONPP data may not be available for the most recent quarters.
