COVID-19 reporting update for Algoma Public Health

Tue, Dec 22, 2020

Algoma Public Health has updated our status of cases of COVID-19 to include active cases in non-Algoma residents who are temporarily in our district.

Across Ontario, confirmed cases of COVID-19 are attributed to where a person resides. In special circumstances, where people happen to be travelling, Algoma Public Health may need to manage cases of confirmed COVID-19 who are temporarily in Algoma but who are not Algoma residents.

Our website stats will indicate if we are managing non-Algoma residents under ‘active cases.’ Non-Algoma residents will appear as active cases in brackets but will not be counted as part of Algoma’s overall confirmed case count. APH conducts contact tracing and monitoring of self-isolation for all cases within Algoma. Algoma residents who are identified as close contacts of a case will be notified directly by APH.

As of December 21, 2020, as part of the Provincewide Shutdown, the Chief Medical Officer of Health is advising all Ontarians to stay home as much as possible, with trips outside the home limited to necessities such as food, medication, medical appointments, or supporting vulnerable community members. Because a person with COVID-19 can spread the virus 48 hours before showing symptoms, staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others.  Travel should be limited to only essential purposes.
