The Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) works as part of a supportive and collaborative interdisciplinary team to promote oral health and well-being across the lifespan in Algoma. The RDH applies skills in clinical care and health promotion to advance evidence-informed oral health programs and deliver oral health services to eligible populations in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Program Standards.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain professional competence and practice in accordance with college standards and organizational policies.
  • Provide dental hygiene care in accordance with the Dental Hygiene Act, including the controlled act of scaling and root planing under own initiative.
  • Deliver and develop oral health services and health promotion programs in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, children, seniors, families, groups, and community partners using both written and verbal communication.
  • Conduct comprehensive oral health assessments, medical histories, risk assessments, and screening for dental and oral conditions.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant clinical documentation and records.
  • Contribute to understanding the oral health needs of the community by participating in situational assessments and applying population health information to inform program planning and service delivery.
  • Follow infection prevention and control standards, reprocessing procedures, and occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Manage and prioritize workload using effective time management and problem-solving skills, seeking input and collaborating with the team when priorities shift.
  • Recognize conditions requiring referral and support client navigation and referrals to dentists and other providers.
  • Provide oral health care and education using evidence-informed practices and a client-centred approach, adapting communication to client needs (e.g., literacy level, language, etc.).
  • Deliver oral health services in both clinic and community outreach settings.
  • Support low-barrier service delivery and adapt care approaches for clients experiencing barriers to access.
  • Support students and peers through knowledge sharing and mentorship as appropriate.

 

Qualifications, Experience, and Public Health Nurse Skills for this position include but not limited to:

  • Diploma or Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited institution.
  • Current registration with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario.
  • Minimum of 3 years recent clinical dental hygiene experience.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Public Health Standards, including the Oral Health Protocol.
  • Understanding of health equity, trauma-informed practice, and the social determinants of health, and ability to apply these concepts when working with diverse and priority populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a respectful and reliable member of a multidisciplinary team, contributing positively to team functioning and shared workload.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, organization, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • Interest in on-going professional development related to public health, health equity, and health promotion.
  • Experience developing, facilitating, and delivering oral health presentations and education sessions to diverse audiences considered an asset.
  • The role involves lifting and moving materials, including transporting dental chairs and using mobility devices to assist clients. Candidates must be able to safely perform these physical duties as required in the delivery of dental hygiene services.
  • Oral and written proficiency in English is essential.  Proficiency in both official languages, as well as knowledge of additional languages relevant to our diverse communities, will be considered an asset.
  • A valid “G” Ontario Driver’s License and use of a reliable vehicle.
  • Ability to travel to various locations throughout Algoma to deliver services.
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • As a condition of employment, employees must meet immunization requirements in accordance with the APH Immunization policy.
  • A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) with satisfactory clearance is a condition of employment, at own expense.
