Recognizing those who help Algoma’s youngest children grow, play, and thrive
!

Algoma Public Health (APH) is pleased to announce the launch of this year’s Public Health Champion – Early Years Edition, celebrating people and organizations who make a meaningful difference in the lives of young children and families across the Algoma district.

Nominations open November 27, 2025, and close January 21, 2026.

This year’s award focuses on those who support healthy child development in the earliest years of life (ages 0–6). These early years lay the foundation for lifelong health, and many partners across Algoma work every day to help infants, young children, and caregivers feel supported, connected, and able to thrive.

“Healthy child development begins long before school. It is shaped by supportive relationships, opportunities to play and learn, and environments where families feel included,” said Dr. Jennifer Loo, Medical Officer of Health at Algoma Public Health. “This award recognizes community members who help create those conditions.”

Nominations are open for four categories:

Parent/Caregiver Champion
Celebrates parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, and those “bonus caregivers” who go above and beyond for young children. These are the everyday connectors - organizing neighbourhood activities, sharing resources, and supporting families with kindness and care.

Professional Champion
Recognizes educators, healthcare workers, and service providers who make a lasting impact on young children. These professionals help families access supports, adapt activities to meet each child’s needs, and create environments where little ones can learn and grow.

Youth/Student Champion
Honours young leaders (24 years and under) who support early years programs, volunteer with community initiatives, or mentor younger children through play, creativity, and learning. Their energy and compassion make a big difference for families.

Organization Champion

Highlights programs, agencies, and community groups that help children 0–6 and their families thrive. These organizations reduce barriers, offer inclusive activities, and work with partners to strengthen services and supports across Algoma.

Award recipients will be honoured at the Algoma Public Health Board of Health meeting on February 25, 2026.

How to submit a nomination
