Health Care Partners Welcome Medical Residents as SSM Named New Pediatric Training Site

Mon, Mar 16, 2026

The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) is the official process that connects medical school graduates with residency training programs across Canada. Sault Ste. Marie, as a training site within NOSM University, was very successful overall, matching all of our programs in first iteration on March 3, 2026.

Group Health Centre (GHC), Sault Area Hospital (SAH) and Algoma Public Health (APH) are pleased to welcome a total of 11 new residents to our community, beginning July 2026:

  • 2 Pediatrics Residents
  • 5 Family Medicine Residents
  • 2 Integrated Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine Residents
  • 1 Psychiatry Resident
  • 1 Public Health and Preventive Medicine Resident

For the first time, Sault Ste. Marie will serve as a home training site for 2 NOSM University pediatric residents, strengthening local pediatric services and expanding training opportunities for future physicians in Northern Ontario. While the community has long welcomed pediatric residents for individual rotations, 2026 marks the first year that incoming first‑year pediatric residents have been matched to Sault Ste. Marie as their primary training site.

Previously, first‑year residents were matched exclusively to Sudbury or Thunder Bay. They will support the care of infants, children, and adolescents across the community. Their clinical learning will take place at both GHC’s pediatric department and SAH, where they will work under the supervision of the local team of pediatric specialists.

“This is a tremendous achievement for our community and an investment in the future of pediatric care in Sault Ste. Marie,” says Dr. Jonathan DellaVedova, Consulting Pediatrician at GHC and Chief of Pediatric & Neonatal Services at SAH. “We have long been committed to training future physicians, and adding Pediatrics to the list of specialties that can be pursued primarily in Sault Ste. Marie is a proud milestone.”

“Having pediatric residents call Sault Ste. Marie their home site is a milestone for our community and an investment in the future of local care. With the arrival of residents from family medicine and other programs, we are strengthening our ability to deliver reliable, accessible services for people at every stage of life. GHC is proud to support this growth and to offer an integrated, team-based environment where future physicians can learn, contribute, and ultimately choose to build their careers,” says Lil Silvano, President & CEO, GHC.

“We congratulate and proudly welcome 11 new medical residents to our community. Our hospital remains deeply committed to medical education and workforce development, strengthening our ability to meet the evolving needs of our community. SAH is honoured to serve as a primary training site for many medical residency specialties, including the newly established pediatrics training program. These training opportunities help support the continued strength and sustainability of care across our programs, our hospital and our community,” says Ila Watson, President & CEO, SAH.

“Algoma Public Health is excited to welcome the newest cohort of resident physicians to Sault Ste. Marie. Healthy growth and development in the early years of life is important for lasting health throughout the lifespan, so we are very happy that Sault Ste. Marie is now a home training site for future pediatricians. As a core training site for Public Health and Preventive Medicine (PHPM) residents, APH looks forward to continuing to support and train physicians both in PHPM and other specialties that are critical for the North,” adds Dr. John Tuinema, Associate Medical Officer of Health, APH.

Through ongoing collaboration with NOSM University, Sault Ste. Marie continues to expand well established residency programs and other medical education opportunities. The addition of Pediatrics as a full-time residency site further enhances the community’s position as an important centre for medical education in Northern Ontario.
