Heat Warning Issued for Elliot Lake – Ranger Lake, and White River - Dubreuilville regions

Thu, Jun 01, 2023

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the Elliot Lake – Ranger Lake, and White River – Dubreuilville regions for Thursday June 1 through Friday June 2.

Algoma Public Health would like to remind the public to follow our tips to help beat the heat.

"Exposure to extreme heat and humidity can lead to illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke," explains Melissa Francella, a public health inspector with Algoma Public Health. "Those most at risk for developing heat-related illnesses include infants and children, older adults, those with chronic health conditions, and people who exercise or are involved in demanding outdoor work for prolonged periods."

Heat-related illnesses are preventable. Remember to follow these tips to help beat the heat:

  • Avoid going out in the sun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • If you are in the sun, wear a hat (wide-brimmed if possible)
  •  Wear sunscreen
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing
  • Spend some time in air-conditioned places such as a shopping mall
  • Take frequent cool showers or baths
  • Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee and cola
  • Cook during the coolest times of the day
  • Reschedule outdoor sport practices, exercising, etc.

In addition, visit adults who are at higher risk of a heat illness at least twice a day. Infants and children also need frequent watching for signs of a heat-related illness. Check in with your local municipality for a list of cooling centres available.
