Respiratory illness season is here: Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated this fall!
Mon, Oct 07, 2024
With the arrival of fall, it’s important to think about what you can do to protect yourself during respiratory season. This fall, Algoma Public Health (APH) encourages everyone to get their COVID-19 and flu vaccines as soon as they are available.
“Both vaccines are safe and can be given during the same appointment, making it quicker for someone to access the immunizations that can help you stay healthy this season,” said Nicholas Minardi, Manager of Immunizations at APH. Vaccines will also be available at participating pharmacies, primary care providers, and APH community clinics.
If you would like to book a COVID-19 or flu shot at a public health community clinic, online and phone line bookings start Thursday, October 10 at 9:00 a.m.
- By phone: Call 705-541-7370 or Toll-Free 1-888-440-3730. Phone lines will be open Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Online: Book an appointment at a clinic near you
Appointments will first be offered to high-risk populations, followed by the general public later this month on October 28. These vaccines can help you avoid missing time from work, school, or activities you enjoy. Both the COVID-19 and flu vaccines are safe and effective for people six months and older. If you receive an immunization before your APH appointment, please contact us to free up an appointment for someone else.
“Vaccination is one of the strongest defenses we have to protect our community from serious illness. By getting both the influenza and COVID-19 vaccine, you are actively preventing the spread of potentially life-threatening illnesses and safeguarding those at higher risk,” said Dr. John Tuinema, Acting Medical Officer of Health at APH. “I urge everyone to prioritize their health and the well-being of our community by staying up to date on their vaccines. Together, we can prevent severe illness and save lives.”
Starting in the 2024-25 season, Ontario is offering more options to prevent RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) in infants. Babies can now get a vaccine, and pregnant individuals can also be vaccinated if recommended by their healthcare provider.
