Two new measles exposure locations in Algoma

Algoma Public Health (APH) is investigating two potential exposure locations to measles in the community. Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily through the air, especially indoors or in other enclosed spaces. APH is conducting a detailed investigation and taking all necessary measures to prevent further spread of the virus.

If you visited these locations outside of the specific dates/times listed above, you are not considered exposed.

Algoma Public Health is advising anyone who may have been exposed to measles to take the following steps.

Check Your Immunization Status

People born before 1970 are considered immune to measles. Additionally, those born in 1970 or later who have had two doses of the MMR vaccine are also considered immune to measles. If you fall under one of these categories, no further action is necessary, but you should monitor for symptoms as a precaution.

High-Risk Individuals Should Take Extra Precautions

Certain individuals are at higher risk of severe illness if infected:

Infants and children under 5
Pregnant individuals
People with weakened immune systems
Unimmunized individuals

If you are in any of these groups and may have been exposed:

Call your healthcare provider or Algoma Public Health at 705-759-5404 or toll-free at 1-866-892-0172, ext. 5404.
You may be eligible for preventive treatment to reduce your risk of illness.

Monitor for Symptoms

Anyone who may have been exposed should watch for symptoms for up to 21 days after exposure. Early signs include:

Runny nose
Red, watery eyes
Cough
Fever
After 3–5 days: a red, blotchy rash that starts on the face and spreads

If you begin to feel unwell, stay home and contact APH or your healthcare provider for guidance. If possible, please call ahead to notify them you have been exposed to measles to protect healthcare staff and other patients.
