Candidate Criteria
- Candidate must be a new entrant into the workforce, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field.
- Candidate must have not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship in the 2020 Mandate.
- Candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
- Candidate must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Once hired, the candidate must reside in the Northern Ontario community in which they are employed.
Position Summary
The Digital Communications Intern will support Algoma Public Health’s website redevelopment and brand refresh projects.
The intern will gain hands-on experience creating branded assets, templates and digital content while learning how communications support public health programs and services.
This internship is a great opportunity for a recent graduate to bring together creativity, design and communications in a practical public health setting. The role supports APH’s brand refresh and website redevelopment by helping to create accessible, user-friendly materials, templates and digital content that reflect the new brand and support clear communication with staff and the public.
Roles and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Brand refresh
- Support the implementation of the new brand identity across organizational materials, templates, and digital channels.
- Help develop and update branded assets, including presentation templates, forms, signage, social media graphics alongside other communication materials.
- Create user-friendly templates that help staff apply the new brand consistently and accurately.
- Assist with converting existing materials to the refreshed brand while ensuring accessibility, plain language, visual consistency, and in alignment with Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) standards.
- Work with the Communications team to organize, maintain and share approved brand assets for staff use.
Website
- Support the website redevelopment project, including coordinating with staff to review, update and develop website content.
- Support the creation of digital assets for use on the website
- Help prepare and organize content for migration to the new website.
- Educate and support staff as they use the website content migration system and follow related content processes.
- Train staff on their website roles and responsibilities.
Social media/digital
- Monitor website and social media analytics.
- Prepare summary reports on digital engagement, reach and performance.
- Experience developing communication materials or templates using tools such as Microsoft 365, Adobe Suite and Canva
Qualifications
Ability, Experience, and Skills for this position include (but not limited to):
- A post-secondary degree or diploma in graphic design, communications, marketing, digital media or a related field.
- Experience creating engaging visual and digital communications for a variety of audiences and platforms.
- Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Strong graphic design skills, including an understanding of layout, typography, colour, branding and visual communication.
- Ability to apply brand standards and maintain a consistent visual identity across communications materials.
- Proficiency using Microsoft office programs including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving and time management skills.
- Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is essential. Proficiency in both official languages, as well as knowledge of additional languages relevant to our diverse communities, will be considered an asset.
- Flexible schedule including weekends and evenings.
- Ability to work outside regular business hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
- Must have valid “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence and use of a reliable vehicle.
- As a condition of employment, employees must meet immunization requirements in accordance with the APH Immunization policy.
- A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) with satisfactory clearance is a condition of employment, at own expense.
