  • Youth Advisors generally participate outside school hours including evenings, summer daytime hours & occasional weekends.

Rate of Pay: $21.10

Position Summary

The Youth Advisor is a student in Grades 10 to 12 who is interested in making a positive difference in their community. As part of a youth advisory group representing youth living in communities across the Algoma District, Youth Advisors contribute to the implementation of Planet Youth Algoma by providing input on implementing youth surveys, helping to promote youth engagement opportunities, sharing youth perspectives, and supporting initiatives that foster healthy, connected, and thriving youth communities. Role and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Flexible scheduling outside school hours including evenings, summer daytime hours, and occasional weekends.
  • Hybrid, virtual, or in-person participation depending on Planet Youth Algoma Project needs.
  • Attendance at meetings, events, and community activities.
  • Participate in Planet Youth Algoma meetings, activities, and youth engagement opportunities in person and virtually.
  • Participate in training, orientation and professional development opportunities.
  • Share youth perspectives, experiences, and ideas to help inform Planet Youth Algoma planning and decision-making.
  • Help promote youth surveys, events, and engagement opportunities within schools and communities.
  • Encourage youth participation in Planet Youth Algoma activities and initiatives.
  • Assist with school and community outreach, events, and other engagement activities.
  • Act as a positive role model and ambassador for Planet Youth Algoma within the community.
  • Collaborate respectfully with fellow Youth Advisors, community partners, and Algoma Public Health representatives.

Qualifications, Requirements, and Skills for this position include (but not limited to):

  • Current high school students between grades 10 to 12.
  • Demonstrated interest in youth wellness, health promotion, mental health, and community development.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work respectfully with individuals from diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is essential.  Proficiency in both official languages, as well as knowledge of additional languages relevant to our diverse communities, will be considered an asset.
  • Access to a computer and internet for virtual meetings is considered an asset.
  • Previous involvement or experience in youth leadership, volunteer initiatives, advocacy, peer support, or advisory committees considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting youth, including mental health, substance use, social determinants of health, equity, and inclusion.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and cultural humility
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Active listening and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
