The infectious disease program, with the support of community partners, works to prevent and control infectious diseases of public health importance, to protect the health and wellbeing of Algoma residents. 

At Algoma Public Health we: 

• Conduct investigations and follow up on diseases of public health significance
• Collaborate with partners to promote awareness, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted disease and blood borne infections (STBBIs)
• Analyze disease trends and work with the community and partners to prevent further spread
• Provide support to healthcare settings, congregate living and childcare settings and personal service settings to meet infection prevention and control standards
• Respond to concerns from the community about infection prevention and control in public settings 

How to prevent infections 

• Clean your hands - wash your hands with soap and water or use alcohol -based hand sanitizer
• Get immunized and keep your immunizations up to date
• Cover coughs and sneezes
• Stay home when sick
• Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches and bathrooms
