Floods are the most costly natural disaster in Canada and the leading cause of emergency in Ontario. Floods can happen at any time of the year and can be caused by a variety of factors. Snow melt, heavy rainfall, spring runoff, ice jams and other extreme weather events are common causes of flooding in Canada.

In the spring, the amount of precipitation and the rate of snow melt both have a significant potential on flooding. In addition, in certain circumstances warning times for these floods are extremely limited so it is vital that the public is properly prepared for these events.

Flood Smart Canada provides information on the risks, what you can do to prepare, and what to do if you experience a flood.
